According to provider reports to the media, 750,000 Americans traveled abroad for medical care in 2007, with men outnumbering women to consider a trip abroad for treatment, by a margin of 44.5 to 33.3 percent.*

Over 6 million Americans are projected to go abroad for medical care in 2010.

Global market value forecast to reach $100 billion by 2012.

U.S. market forecast to grow 1000% and each a $21 billion market value by 2012.

Research reveals the potential for 20-40% of the non-urgent care market to opt for care abroad if a $10,000 inpatient incentive is in place.

More than 250 US employers currently have access agreements in place to permit their employees to access care from foreign hospitals and physicians. Many of those agreements cover companion traveler costs, business class airfare, and waive co-payments and deductibles if the foreign provider is chosen over higher-cost, similarly qualified and credentialed domestic
providers.

Maria Teaches Managed Care to Mexican Medical Providers and Hospitals

Maria Todd presented a full day class on Managed Care Contract Analysis for medical tourism providers through the Monterrey Healthcare City in Monterrey, Mexico.  The day long event was conducted at the classroom facilities in the new Christus Muguerza-Sur hospital and attended by all hospitals that participate in the Monterrey Healthcare City.  Each hospital sent three delegates, most of which were Executive positions charged with the responsibility to develop new business opportunities for the hospitals and economy of Monterrey, Mexico.  Pictured here with Barbara Baker (fuchsia suit), Medical Tourism Facilitator, Maria Todd is relaxing during the lunch break at a local restaurant. To her right is the CEO of  Hospital Vitra and several of the dentists and Chief Legal Counsel for La Casa de Diente.

Maria presented the class as a part of the professional development outreach available through the Council on the Global Integration of Healthcare, a nonprofit research and education association.  Through this program, in keeping with its mission, the CGIH offers a speakers' bureau  staffed by members of the Advisory Board of the Council who agree to provide training and development for hospitals and physicians worldwide at a modest honorarium and coverage of expenses.

The class covers an introduction to managed care concepts, organizational structures and programs. During the class, she explained the organizational differences between HMOs, PPOs, Consumer Driven Health Plans and other third-party healthcare reimbursement programs.  The curriculum then progressed to the various reimbursement systems including fee for service, case rate and capitation.  The late morning continued with denials and appeals issues, and cost containment methods.  Upon return from lunch, the group engaged in hands-on review of a typical "all payer" agreement, analyzing it  line-by-line and discussing the effect of vague and ambiguous language and contract provisions.

This class was also conducted in Bangkok, Thailand for several hospitals in February.  It is scheduled to be presented in several other countries throughout the world this year to prepare the providers for the inevitability of third-party insurance and employer healthcare reimbursement from the US.   If you would like information on how to arrange to have this class presented through your national hospital association outside the United States, please contact the Maria Todd, President of CGIH at 800.727.4160.

Classes are available on a variety of topics including insurance billing, coding, accreditation preparation, service line development and pricing, marketing and website development, and managed care contracting.

In International Healthcare, Maria has been busy completing the manuscript on "The Medical Tourism Facilitator Handbook"( Productivity Press) and another book, titled  "Medical Tourism Program Development" (Productivity Press) both due out in 2009 or early 2010.  She has been lecturing on Medical Tourism and consulting in the Medical Tourism domain for several years.

Take Their Word For It...

“From the very first time I observed Maria as a seminar instructor, which was before I know her personally, I was impressed by how much she respects and works for her students, who were also our customers. Everything she did was designed from their perspective and done to ensure the best possible outcome for them. Unlike many instructors, she listened to students--she took their comments and ideas and incorporated them immediately into the next seminar. She continuously asked questions of her students, all of whom are working in the field. She used student feedback (real-world information) combined with her insight and vast knowledge of the healthcare finance industry to develop completely new program content--programs that no one else in the industry had though of. Her creativity and understanding of adult learning, coupled with industry knowledge that is current and broad make her a superlative instructor and business consultant.” Teri Jarvie, former meeting planner with HFMA [August 15, 2008]
